HSG258 Compliant Testing by BOHS Qualified Engineers
What is LEV Testing?
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) testing, formally known as Thorough Examination and Test (TExT), is a statutory requirement under COSHH regulation 9. Every LEV system must be tested at least every
14 months, unless the schedule should be shortened for high risk process or stated in COSHH schedule 4, by a competent person to ensure it effectively protects workers from hazardous substances
including dust, fumes, vapours, and mists.
At Combined Air Limited, our BOHS-qualified engineers conduct comprehensive Thorough Examination and Test (TExT) in accordance with HSG258 - the Health and Safety Executive's definitive guidance
on LEV systems.
Why Choose Combined Air Limited for LEV Testing?

- General Industrial Extraction - Any dust or fume hazard
What Does Our LEV Testing Include?
Our comprehensive Thorough Examination and Test (TExT) includes:
- Visual Inspection - Complete system examination from hood to discharge
- Air Velocity Measurements - Capture velocity testing at all extraction points
- Static Pressure Readings - System performance evaluation
- Filter Condition Assessment - Pressure drop and contamination checks
- Ductwork Integrity Checks - Leak detection and damage assessment
- Fan Performance Evaluation - Motor and impeller condition
- Written Scheme Examination - Review against original design specification
- Detailed Technical Report - Comprehensive findings and recommendations
- Certificate of Thorough Examination - Your legal proof of compliance
Legal Requirements - Why LEV Testing is Mandatory
Under COSHH Regulation 9, employers must ensure LEV systems are thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months, unless the schedule should be shortened for high risk process or
stated in COSHH sechedule 4.
Failure to comply can result in:
- HSE Improvement or Prohibition Notices
- Unlimited fines for health and safety breaches
- Insurance policy invalidation
- Potential workplace closure orders
- Corporate manslaughter prosecution in serious cases
- Employee health claims and litigation
More importantly, proper LEV testing protects your workforce from serious occupational diseases including:
- Occupational asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Pneumoconiosis (dust-related lung disease)
- Dermatitis and skin conditions
- Metal fume fever
What Happens During Your LEV Test?
- 1. Pre-Test Consultation - We discuss your processes and any known issues
- 2. On-Site Examination - Comprehensive testing with minimal disruption to production
- 3. Pass or Fail Assessment - Clear determination of system effectiveness
- 4. Detailed Report - Technical findings with recommendations for improvement
- 5. Certificate Issued - Official documentation of compliance
- 6. Remedial Works (if required) - We can carry out repairs to bring systems back to compliance
Our BOHS Qualifications - What Makes Us Different
Not all LEV testers are created equal. Our comprehensive BOHS qualification set means we provide a higher level of expertise:
P601 - Foundation LEV Testing: The essential qualification for conducting thorough examinations and tests of LEV systems.
P604 - Advanced Performance Evaluation: Advanced qualification covering commissioning and performance management of LEV systems. This enables us to conduct more detailed analysis
than basic P601 testing.
P602 - Design Principles Knowledge: Understanding of LEV design enables us to identify whether poor performance is due to maintenance issues or fundamental design problems. This
saves you money by identifying the real root cause.
P603 - PPE & RPE Expertise: Knowledge of personal protective equipment means we can advise on suitable respiratory protection where LEV alone cannot achieve adequate
control.
W201/M200 - Occupational Hygiene: Broader understanding of workplace exposure control helps us consider your LEV system within the context of your overall health and safety
strategy.
